AMA’s Chairwoman participates in the first meeting of the National Council for Gender Equality

The Chairwoman of the Audiovisual Media Authority, Ms. Armela Krasniqi, participated in the first meeting of the National Council for Gender Equality, an interinstitutional roundtable aimed at strengthening coordination and cooperation in promoting gender equality.

The meeting was attended by high-level representatives of ministries and Council member institutions, representatives of independent institutions, including the Ombudsman and the Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination, as well as representatives of civil society and international organizations operating in Tirana.

The discussions highlighted the importance of coordinated policies, institutional cooperation and the creation of a public and media environment that promotes fair representation, respect for human dignity and language free from discrimination and gender stereotypes.

For the Audiovisual Media Authority, its commitment to gender equality is directly linked to its legal mandate to protect against discrimination, prevent gender stereotypes, uphold human dignity and ensure the fair representation of women and girls in audiovisual content.

“This commitment has also been reflected in AMA’s work throughout 2026. Between January and September, 8 cases involving sexist and discriminatory language were reviewed. In 4 of these cases, the Authority issued warnings, while financial sanctions were imposed in 3 cases. In one further case, following a review, the content was deemed to fall within the boundaries of freedom of expression and public debate”, said AMA’s Chairwoman. She added that this approach reflects the need to strike a balance between protecting human dignity and individual rights, on the one hand, and safeguarding freedom of expression and pluralism in public debate, on the other.

The National Council for Gender Equality, which started its work with this meeting, serves as a mechanism for strengthening interinstitutional coordination and translating commitments to gender equality into concrete and measurable measures.

Ms. Krasniqi stated that AMA would continue to contribute, within the scope of its legal mandate, to an audiovisual environment that respects equality, dignity and rights, while ensuring freedom of expression and pluralism in public debate.
