Children’s safety in the digital environment requires the attention and commitment of everyone. According to a UNICEF report, approximately 1 in 5 internet-using children aged 12–17 experienced at least one form of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse over the course of a year. The findings are based on data from 21 countries.
The report shows that nearly 60% of cases occurred on social media platforms. In 57% of cases, the person involved was someone the child knew. More than 40% of cases were not disclosed to anyone, while fewer than 1% were reported to the relevant authorities or services.
These findings emphasize the importance of maintaining open and ongoing communication with children about online risks. Parents and teachers should listen to them without judgment, help them recognize potentially dangerous situations, and encourage them to seek help and report any concerns.
Protecting children in the digital environment is a shared responsibility.
