The last day of school for high schools in Durrës concluded with a session on Media Literacy. The long-running campaign launched by the Audiovisual Media Authority made a stop yesterday in the coastal city of Durrës, where over 200 students from the high schools “Gjergj Kastrioti”, “Naim Frashëri” and “Leonik Tomeo” watched a series of videos prepared by AMA on various negative phenomena and hidden risks of the virtual world, followed by an open discussion on how to protect themselves against these threats.
The activity, held at the Children’s Cultural Center in Durrës and designed as an interactive dialogue with the young people, placed special emphasis on the dangers of excessive internet exposure, hate speech and its consequences, the importance of protecting personal data, etc. as well as the solutions and advice the experts provided.
Present at this Media Literacy session was also AMA’s Chair Armela Krasniqi, who actively participated and led the discussion with Durrës high school students.
“Never forget, the first step, that of critical thinking, it’s essential for staying safe in the virtual world”, said Krasniqi. “The media literacy we are promoting is much more than a protective barrier between you and the dangers of the digital world. It’s more than just a set of strict rules to follow. It’s a dynamic and practical discipline, just like the subjects you study at school”.
In the videos presented, produced by the Audiovisual Media Authority in cooperation with the Turkish regulator RTUK, students watched concrete information about well-known risks in cyberspace and the measures needed to stay safe online. Topics included social media, online advertising, sharing personal information about themselves and their family, threats from viruses and data theft, etc. The discussions also focused on the importance of protecting personal data, precautionary safety measures and the personal information forms that should never be shared with others. A special topic was online hate speech in all its forms.
“Report hate speech at every moment”, Krasniqi urged the students. “Report every case of bullying, every instance of sexism and any other hate speech phenomena”.
This activity was carried out in cooperation with the Local Education Office of Durrës and the city’s Children’s Cultural Center.
