In continuation of the close inter-institutional cooperation and commitment to ensuring a sustainable and professional public media service, the Audiovisual Media Authority (AMA) participated in the comprehensive roundtable organized by RTSH, with the topic “RTSH – Today’s challenges and the vision for the future”, held today, July 9th 2025.
This RTSH initiative, with a reflective and forward-looking approach, brought together around the discussion table high-level representatives of media institutions, RTSH leaders, members of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Public Information Means, prominent figures of Albanian journalism throughout the years, representatives of civil society and non-governmental organizations, as well as representatives from national and international institutions operating in the field of media and public information.
At this meeting, AMA was represented by its Chairwoman, Ms. Armela Krasniqi, who in her remarks, praised RTSH’s initiative as an important step toward placing the role of public media at the center of public discourse in a democratic society. She emphasized that the relationship between AMA and RTSH is one defined by law, which clearly outlines the responsibilities and expectations of both institutions.
“In accordance with Law no. 97/2013 “On Audiovisual Media in the Republic of Albania”, as amended, one of AMA’s key responsibilities is to monitor and ensure the implementation of the public service contract with RTSH. This relationship is not merely technical or procedural but it’s essential to safeguarding a public media that is free, independent and committed to serving the public interest”, stated Ms. Krasniqi.
In her remarks, she emphasized that AMA is currently at a key moment in the process of reforming its legal framework, with the aim of further aligning it with European Union standards and the new directives such as the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA).
These reforms represent a concrete opportunity to reconceptualize and further strengthen the functioning of public media, making it more transparent, more accountable and more responsive to the citizens needs.
“We remain open to any form of collaboration that RTSH may need, in order to build together a modern, professional public broadcaster that has the trust of the Albanian public. This is not a task that falls solely to RTSH, but a shared institutional responsibility”, concluded Ms. Krasniqi.
This meeting served as a valuable moment of reflection and constructive dialogue to exchange ideas, experiences and visions for the future of public media in an increasingly dynamic and challenging media landscape. AMA commends RTSH’s commitment to launching an open and inclusive consultation process, as a clear indication of its willingness to advance toward a more democratic, independent and public interest oriented media model.
