The meeting focused on the OSCE’s role as one of AMA’s most important strategic partners in strengthening democratic standards, safeguarding freedom of expression and consolidating an independent and transparent media environment in line with European standards.
During the discussions, Ambassador Braathu expressed particular interest in gaining a closer understanding of AMA’s institutional functioning, the regulator’s approach toward the public, as well as the administrative and legal mechanisms that ensure the proper handling of complaints submitted by citizens and stakeholders regarding audiovisual content. Special attention was given to the number of complaints administered by the institution, the procedures for their review and AMA’s role in ensuring a balance between freedom of expression and the protection of the public from harmful content.
In this context, the discussions also addressed AMA’s cooperation with major digital platforms regarding the reporting and handling of harmful online content, as a contemporary practice reflecting the regulator’s institutional responsibility in addressing the emerging challenges of the media ecosystem and the European framework for digital regulation. Ambassador Braathu highly praised AMA’s progress in strengthening the rule of law and upholding standards of freedom of expression, emphasizing that the experience of the Albanian regulator constitutes an important model to be followed by regulators across Southeast Europe.
