The Audiovisual Media Authority’s Chairwoman, Ms. Armela Krasniqi, attended the presentation of the “Journalism Saves Lives” Award, an initiative aimed at recognising and promoting responsible media reporting on suicide and mental health in Albania.
The event highlighted the importance of approaching these sensitive issues with care and responsibility, taking into account the potential impact of media reporting on the families of those involved, the wider public, and, in particular, individuals experiencing emotional or psychological distress.
In this context, the media bears a particular responsibility for how it chooses to report on cases of suicide. Respect for dignity and privacy, the avoidance of unnecessary details and the protection of vulnerable individuals are essential elements of professional and ethical journalism.
Another important aspect of the initiative is the role journalism can play in addressing mental health. Accurate and balanced reporting can help combat prejudice and stigma, fostering a better understanding of mental health issues while guiding the public towards appropriate information and sources of support.
The “Journalism Saves Lives” Award serves as a call for a media approach that places human responsibility on an equal footing with professional responsibility. Through this recognition, the initiative seeks to highlight good practices and encourage journalism that informs without sensationalising the news, respects the pain of individuals and their families and approaches such a sensitive issue with care, restraint, and a strong sense of responsibility.
