AMA’s Chair issues a warning: Do not broadcast the 14-year-old’s murder footage. Disciplinary measures are foreseen for those who violate the law

AMA’s Chair, Ms. Armela Krasniqi, has issued a statement today following the circulation of a video showing footage before and after the incident that took place in November of last year, in which a 14-year-old boy was killed. She has called on audiovisual media service providers to refrain from broadcasting the footage, emphasizing that it not only violates human ethics but also violates professional codes and the applicable legal framework. Krasniqi has warned that legal measures will be taken against violators.

Below is the full statement:

Warning

I am following with deep concern the circulation and rapid spread of a video that takes us back to the tragic event that occurred in the capital in November of last year, in which a 14-year-old boy lost his life. Several media outlets are rushing to publish footage showing moments before and after his killing.

I fully understand the widespread public sensitivity surrounding this event, which justifiably calls for the engagement of media professionals in general and audiovisual media in particular who have informed the public and continue to show interest in the case and the subsequent investigation. I also acknowledge their good intentions in seeking to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

But be CAREFUL!

The race for viewers must never come before ethics and the application of the law, which is clear and strict in this regard. The publication of such footage constitutes an abuse, aimed at exploiting the tragedy from a sensationalist angle, while disregarding its human side. In the name of the child’s best interests, out of respect for the grief of the victim’s family, in light of the Albanian public deep sensitivity and our shared social responsibility, I call on every audiovisual media service provider to refrain from broadcasting such images.

Dear colleagues!

Uphold ethics!

Respect the pain of losing a child!

Respect professional codes and the law!

AMA is following closely every case and any violation will be addressed in compliance with the applicable legislation. However, my appeal today is directed to all media professionals, do not allow a violation that carries such serious consequences.

I remain hopeful that the response from my colleagues leading newsrooms and other media outlets will continue to reflect the approach shown thus far, swift, responsible and in line with human conscience, professional ethics and the standards set forth in the Law “On Audiovisual Media in the Republic of Albania”, as amended, the Broadcasting Code and other relevant by-laws currently in force.
